While many coloured gemstones form within the Earth’s crust, peridot develops much deeper, within the Earth’s upper mantle — in close proximity to the region where diamonds begin their journey before being brought closer to the surface through volcanic activity.

On exceptional occasions, peridot has even been discovered inside pallasite meteorites that have travelled through space before reaching Earth. While these extraterrestrial crystals are rarely used in jewellery, they add another fascinating chapter to the gemstone’s extraordinary story.

In nature, peridot is usually found as crystal fragments or rounded pebbles, while some of the world’s finest, larger crystals are recovered from the mountainous regions of Pakistan.

• Brazil.
• Zabargad Island in the Red Sea, one of the oldest known sources of peridot, where the gemstone has been mined since ancient times.

Nature’s Unique Fingerprints

Like all natural gemstones, every peridot tells its own story. Tiny internal features, known as inclusions, often reveal the conditions under which the stone formed millions of years ago.

Some peridots contain delicate black Ludwigite needles or distinctive flat stress fractures that resemble tiny water lily pads. These look so pretty under the microscope. While heavily included stones may appear less transparent, many collectors appreciate the clear stones which have natural characteristics as evidence of the gem’s authenticity and individuality.

One particularly fascinating feature of peridot is its double refraction. In well-cut stones, careful observation may reveal doubled back facet edges (peridot can look blurry inside at macro level)— a natural optical effect that helps gemmologists identify genuine peridot.

One of the qualities that makes peridot especially appealing is that it is rarely subjected to significant treatments.

Unlike many coloured gemstones, peridot is not routinely heat-treated. In fact, excessive heat can damage the stone or alter its beautiful green colour, causing unwanted brownish tones. As a result, the vibrant colour seen in fine peridot is almost always entirely natural.

Occasionally, on lower quality peridot stones very small surface-reaching fractures may be filled with colourless oils or waxes to improve appearance, but these enhancements are relatively minor compared with treatments commonly used for other gemstones.

Most stones marketed as “synthetic peridot” are actually imitation materials made from light green-coloured laboratory-created quartz (which has the exact same chemical composition SiO₂), cubic zirconia, or synthetic sapphire used as sustainable and affordable simulants, glass or other substances can be used to simply resemble the natural gemstone.

Caring for Your Peridot Jewellery

With a hardness of around 6.5 on the Mohs scale, peridot is durable enough for regular wear when treated with care. While it is tougher than some more brittle gemstones, it is still softer and susceptible to chemical damage more than sapphires, rubies or diamonds and deserves thoughtful handling. Ideally, peridot is well suited for earrings and pendants or occasional wear rings.
