However, hardness alone does not determine durability. Due to their natural inclusions and internal fissures, emeralds are more brittle than many other gemstones, making them more susceptible to chipping or cracking under pressure.

This inherent fragility is a direct result of their formation. As highlighted in our earlier article, emeralds crystallise in rare geological environments, often within metamorphic or hydrothermal deposits. The conditions required for their creation are so specific that inclusions like fissures, minute fractures from stop/start temperature growth spurts and solid and fluid minerals are almost always present. These inclusions, while beautiful, can create points of weakness within the stone.

For this reason, emerald jewellery should be worn with a degree of mindfulness. Rings, in particular, are more exposed to daily wear and are therefore at greater risk of impact. Bracelets may also experience knocks against hard surfaces, while necklaces and earrings tend to be safer options for regular wear.

Extreme temperature changes can cause contraction and expansion within the stone leading to higher risk of cracking so ideally do not take emeralds to saunas and icy cold climates.

• Store your jewellery carefully
  Emeralds should be stored separately from harder gemstones such as diamonds, which could scratch their surface. A soft-lined jewellery box or individual pouch is ideal.

Despite these considerations, emeralds are not stones to be hidden away. With proper care, they can be enjoyed regularly and will reward the wearer with a depth of colour and character that few other gemstones can match.

Cleaning Emeralds Safely: What Never to Do

The most important rule is simple: avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners entirely.

Ultrasonic cleaners work by using high-frequency vibrations to remove dirt, but these vibrations can aggravate existing fissures within an emerald. Similarly, steam cleaning exposes the stone to intense heat and pressure, which can damage both the gemstone and any treatments it has undergone.

Instead, a gentle and traditional approach is best.

Safe Cleaning Method

To clean your emerald jewellery at home:

1. Prepare a bowl of lukewarm water with diluted fairy liquid washing up liquid

2. Place the jewellery in the water briefly—do not leave it to soak

3. Use a soft brush (such as a soft toothbrush) or a lint-free cloth to gently remove any dirt

4. Rinse carefully with clean water

5. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth

This method is effective whilst remaining kind to the stone.

What Never to Do

As discussed in our earlier article, the majority of emeralds on the market have undergone some form of treatment. This is not unusual or undesirable; rather, it is an accepted practice that enhances the stone’s natural beauty. There are, however, different types of oils and fillers and not all are good. • Wax-based fillers, used in some cases but generally considered less stable and should be disclosed

• Dyed fillers, occasionally used to enhance colour and always requiring full disclosure

The Temporary Nature of Treatments

It is important to understand that oiling is not a permanent solution. Over time, the filler within an emerald can:

• Dry out naturally

• Be affected by exposure to heat or chemicals

• Gradually diminish with wear

As this happens, the stone may appear less clear than when it was first purchased.

This is entirely normal and part of owning an emerald.

Long-Term Care and Re-Oiling

To maintain the appearance of your emerald, periodic maintenance may be required. This can include re-oiling, a process carried out by a professional jeweller who carefully cleans the stone and reapplies the appropriate filler.
