However, hardness alone does not determine durability. This inherent fragility is a direct result of their formation. As highlighted in our earlier article, emeralds crystallise in rare geological environments, often within metamorphic or hydrothermal deposits. The conditions required for their creation are so specific that inclusions like fissures, minute fractures from stop/start temperature growth spurts and solid and fluid minerals are almost always present. These inclusions, while beautiful, can create points of weakness within the stone.

Ultrasonic cleaners work by using high-frequency vibrations to remove dirt, but these vibrations can aggravate existing fissures within an emerald. Similarly, steam cleaning exposes the stone to intense heat and pressure, which can damage both the gemstone and any treatments it has undergone.
Instead, a gentle and traditional approach is best.
Safe Cleaning Method
To clean your emerald jewellery at home:
Prepare a bowl of lukewarm water with diluted fairy liquid washing up liquid
Place the jewellery in the water briefly—do not leave it to soak
Use a soft brush (such as a soft toothbrush) or a lint-free cloth to gently remove any dirt
Rinse carefully with clean water
Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth

This is not unusual or undesirable; rather, it is an accepted practice that enhances the stone’s natural beauty. There are, however, different types of oils and fillers and not all are good.
