How to Care for Emeralds: A Guide to Preserving Their Natural Beauty

Emeralds have long captivated jewellery lovers with their rich green hue and timeless elegance. As explored in our previous feature, All About Emeralds: An Expert Guide to Emerald Jewellery, these remarkable gemstones are not only rare but also wonderfully complex. Formed under extraordinary geological conditions requiring the unlikely meeting of elements such as beryllium and chromium, emeralds are true marvels of nature.

When customers encounter a vivid green gemstone, their instinct is often to assume it is an emerald. While alternatives such as Tsavorite garnet, tourmaline, or green sapphire may share a similar colour palette, emeralds hold a prestige and cultural significance that sets them apart. Their deep, saturated green and storied history—favoured by royalty and collectors for centuries—give them an unmistakable identity.

Yet part of what makes emeralds so fascinating is also what makes them more delicate. Unlike diamonds, which are valued for their clarity, emeralds are celebrated for their inclusions—those intricate internal features known as jardin, meaning “garden” in French. These natural markings are not flaws, but rather fingerprints of the earth, telling the story of each stone’s formation.

However, these same characteristics mean emeralds require a more thoughtful approach to care. Whether you already own emerald jewellery or are considering investing in a piece, understanding how to properly care for these gemstones will ensure they remain as captivating as the day you first wore them.

How to Care for Emerald Jewellery (Why These Gems Need Special Attention)

Emeralds occupy a unique position in the world of fine gemstones. With a hardness of approximately 7.5 on the Mohs scale, they are by no means soft. However, hardness alone does not determine durability. Due to their natural inclusions and internal fissures, emeralds are more brittle than many other gemstones, making them more susceptible to chipping or cracking under pressure.

This inherent fragility is a direct result of their formation. As highlighted in our earlier article, emeralds crystallise in rare geological environments, often within metamorphic or hydrothermal deposits. The conditions required for their creation are so specific that inclusions like fissures, minute fractures from stop/start temperature growth spurts and solid and fluid minerals are almost always present. These inclusions, while beautiful, can create points of weakness within the stone.

For this reason, emerald jewellery should be worn with a degree of mindfulness. Rings, in particular, are more exposed to daily wear and are therefore at greater risk of impact. Bracelets may also experience knocks against hard surfaces, while necklaces and earrings tend to be safer options for regular wear.

To care for your emerald jewellery properly:

  • Avoid impact wherever possible
Even a minor knock against a hard surface can cause damage and your stone may cleave along a fissure. Remove emerald rings when engaging in physical activities such as exercise, gardening, or lifting heavy objects.

  • Be cautious with everyday substances
Perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and household cleaning products can all affect the surface of the stone or its treatments. It is best to apply cosmetics before putting on your jewellery.

  • Limit exposure to heat, submerging in fluids and sudden temperature changes
Extreme heat can affect the oils used to enhance emerald clarity, potentially causing them to dry out or shift within the stone, whilst submerging in water, fairy liquid and other fluids may cause the oil fillers to seep out affecting the appearance of the stone. Extreme temperature changes can cause contraction and expansion within the stone leading to higher risk of cracking so ideally do not take emeralds to saunas and icy cold climates.

  • Store your jewellery carefully
Emeralds should be stored separately from harder gemstones such as diamonds, which could scratch their surface. A soft-lined jewellery box or individual pouch is ideal.

Despite these considerations, emeralds are not stones to be hidden away. With proper care, they can be enjoyed regularly and will reward the wearer with a depth of colour and character that few other gemstones can match.

Cleaning Emeralds Safely: What Never to Do

Cleaning emerald jewellery is an area where extra caution is essential. While it may be tempting to use modern jewellery cleaning methods, many of these can cause irreversible damage to emeralds.

The most important rule is simple: avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners entirely.

Ultrasonic cleaners work by using high-frequency vibrations to remove dirt, but these vibrations can aggravate existing fissures within an emerald. Similarly, steam cleaning exposes the stone to intense heat and pressure, which can damage both the gemstone and any treatments it has undergone.

Instead, a gentle and traditional approach is best.

Safe Cleaning Method

To clean your emerald jewellery at home:

  1. Prepare a bowl of lukewarm water with diluted fairy liquid washing up liquid

  2. Place the jewellery in the water briefly—do not leave it to soak

  3. Use a soft brush (such as a soft toothbrush) or a lint-free cloth to gently remove any dirt

  4. Rinse carefully with clean water

  5. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth

This method is effective whilst remaining kind to the stone.

What Never to Do

Understanding what to avoid is just as important as knowing what to do:

  • Do not soak emeralds for extended periods
Prolonged exposure to water can affect the fillers within the stone.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals and detergents
These can break down oils or resins and may even discolour the stone.

  • Never expose emeralds to high heat
Heat can cause fillers to expand, contract, or evaporate, compromising the appearance and integrity of the gem.

  • Do not use abrasive materials
Even though emeralds are relatively hard, their surface can still be scratched.

For valuable or heirloom pieces, professional cleaning by a trusted jeweller is always recommended. They will have the expertise to assess the condition of the stone and clean it appropriately.

Understanding Emerald Oil Treatments and Long-Term Care

One of the most distinctive aspects of emeralds—and one that every owner should understand—is the use of clarity enhancement treatments, particularly oiling.

As discussed in our earlier article, the majority of emeralds on the market have undergone some form of treatment. This is not unusual or undesirable; rather, it is an accepted practice that enhances the stone’s natural beauty. There are, however, different types of oils and fillers and not all are good. Resins and glass fillers are not ideal and should be disclosed at the time of sale. Here at Timothy Roe we work with emeralds that are oiled with natural oils like cederwood.

Why Emeralds Are Treated

Due to the presence of surface-reaching fissures, untreated emeralds can sometimes appear cloudy or less vibrant. To improve clarity, these fissures are filled with substances that reduce their visibility and allow light to pass through the stone more effectively.

The most traditional and widely respected treatment is cedarwood oil. This natural oil has a consistency similar to emerald, making it particularly effective at minimising the appearance of inclusions and blending with the stone.

Other fillers may include:

  • Synthetic resins, which offer greater durability but are less traditional

  • Wax-based fillers, used in some cases but generally considered less stable and should be disclosed

  • Dyed fillers, occasionally used to enhance colour and always requiring full disclosure

The Temporary Nature of Treatments

It is important to understand that oiling is not a permanent solution. Over time, the filler within an emerald can:

  • Dry out naturally

  • Be affected by exposure to heat or chemicals

  • Gradually diminish with wear

As this happens, the stone may appear less clear than when it was first purchased.

This is entirely normal and part of owning an emerald.

Long-Term Care and Re-Oiling

To maintain the appearance of your emerald, periodic maintenance may be required. This can include re-oiling, a process carried out by a professional jeweller who carefully cleans the stone and reapplies the appropriate filler.

The frequency of re-oiling depends on several factors:

  • How often the jewellery is worn

  • The type of filler used

  • Exposure to environmental conditions

Some emeralds may go many years without needing attention, while others may benefit from occasional maintenance every 5 years.

When purchasing an emerald, it is always advisable to ask about:

  • The type of treatment used

  • The extent of clarity enhancement

  • Recommendations for ongoing care

A reputable jeweller will provide full transparency and guidance.
