THE 4 Cs

Carat, Cut, Colour and Clarity are the universal attributes that are used to grade diamonds. Diamonds that have the highest grading of these four attributes, are the most valuable.

Carat

The carat of a diamond refers to its weight and size. Diamonds of the same weight can however vary in size depending on the proportions of the cut.

Cut

The best diamonds are cut to good proportions, reflecting light from one facet to another. This creates the ‘brilliance’ that diamonds are so famous for.

Diamonds are cut in many shapes, with round being the most popular. Round, Princess, Cushion, Heart, Pear, Marquise, Radiant, Asscher, Emerald and Oval.

Colour

Even though the majority of diamonds look white, many of them show a small amount of colour. The whitest (or perhaps clearest) diamonds are the most valuable. A diamonds colour is graded from D to Z - D being an ‘Exceptional White’ and Z being a heavily ‘Tinted’ Colour.

Clarity

Many diamonds contain inclusions or “nature’s finger prints”. These can be in the form of tiny black marks, through to feather-like white lines. The fewer inclusions in a stone, the better its clarity. The highest grade is IF (Internally Flawless) - diamonds with this clarity grading contain no inclusions, even under powerful magnification. The lowest grade is P3 (Pique 3) - diamonds with this clarity grading would show many inclusions without looking through a loupe, just using the naked eye.
