Longitude & Latitude Cufflinks
Just a quick post with a link to a video showing how we made a pair of silver cufflinks with a very specific design. The design is inspired by compass used by Sherpa Tenzing and Sir Edmund Hillary who were the first pair to climb all the way to the top of Mount Everest - the highest mountain on earth! Our customer has a close friend who is getting married so three pairs were commissioned for the grooms party - the groom is planning a trip to Mount Everest Base Camp in 2012, hence the inspiration for the design. The cufflinks were designed using 3designCAD a great piece of software which we use everyday - designing all types of jewellery from engagement rings to bicycle charms!
Once the design was complete we emailed a photo and a video to our customer for their approval - after a couple of tweaks we then got the go ahead to make them up in silver.
The design files are then loaded onto our rapid prototyping machine - a 3D printer - that uses two different types of wax to build an exact model of the cufflinks. The wax models are then cast into silver, giving us exact replica of the wax models. The silver castings are polished and cleaned up giving us the finished pair of cufflinks.
