2017 Christmas Window

2017 Christmas Window

We began thinking about our Christmas windows in February of this year. Many hours were spent over the following months collecting late 19th century and early 20th century images of cherubic angels and christmas themed vintage prints. Then came the painstaking process of trimming the images and digitally arranging them in a way that would give the 3 dimensional look similar to that of a theatre stage set. Arranging the angels and animals around the baby Jesus in the manger was the next step. Once we had agreed on the the layout of the designs they were split up and sent to a print company to be printed onto 5mm foam board. At this point we also decided on printing the same images at just 25% of the size to use on our advent calendar.

The larger printed display boards were cut out with a jig-saw and the white edges were coloured black to ensure all the details really stood out. The smaller details were cut out with a jewellers saw and a coping saw by hand. Something that is much easier fora goldsmith as the hand saw is one of the most used tools.

The cut out displays were then either mounted on wooden blocks for standing on a flat base or had small screws added to the tops for hanging in the window. Our display lighting for jewellery comes downwards so we added flexible LED lighting strips which were stuck to the backs of some of the display boards to ensure there was the right amount of light throughout the windows.

Our advent calendar was ordered in as a basic unpainted wooden frame which we then painted using acrylic paints blended with water. The gold numbers were placed on each drawer afterwards. The smaller hand cut images of the manger, angels and flowers were arranged afterwards and secured using a glue gun within the recessed area to mimic the larger display in our South window. Using more LED strip lights to line the inner layers ensuring that the details were aptly lit.
